Beloved fitness personality and best-selling author Richard Simmons has come out of the television closet and admitted he is an unabashed American Idol addict.
In a telephone interview on the Howard Stern Show promoting his new book/DVD package, "Sock It 2 The Fat," Simmons told host Howard Stern that he never misses an episode of the long-running Fox reality show, the eighth season of which is winding down to a highly anticipated finale in May.
When asked what he thought of Season 8 front-runner and finale shoo-in Adam Lambert, Simmons minced no words and declared the 27-year-old California native's over-the-top theatricality a little too hard to swallow.
"I'm sorry, but the guy's just too gay, not that there's anything wrong with that," Simmons said, eliciting jeers from Stern's on-air crew. "I'm not a homophobe, I swear. I'm just not a big fan of the excessive squealing and screeching."
The fitness guru hastened to add that he's had to put his television on mute whenever it's Lambert's turn to perform on the show.
When told that the same could be said of him, Simmons retorted, "But, see, I'm not competing to be the next American Idol. So, nyah!"
Given the scenario that's shaping up at this point, Simmons said it will be a tall order for him to watch the finale, but stressed that he would still watch it regardless.
"I'm rooting for Allison Iraheta to win," he said. "She's the only girl left, and she can actually sing. I always go for the underdog."
"Sock It 2 The Fat" is now available at Wal-Mart stores across the nation and can be ordered directly from the Richard Simmons official website.
