Shaun of the Dead (2004) - IMDb
9/10
Hilarious, tongue-in-cheek send-up of the zombie genre. There is never a dull moment in this movie. Simon Pegg's titular character is balls-to-the-wall funny. An instant cult classic!

Easy A (2010) - IMDb

A delightful teen comedy that doesn't employ the usual tricks of the genre. Emma Stone is refreshing as the titular character, and the supporting cast members all do a good job in making the movie a fun, lighthearted and bubbly experience.

Sorority Boys (2002) - IMDb

Crass, tasteless, brainless sub-par comedy whose only redeeming asset is Michael Rosenbaum's unflinching commitment to wearing a dress and pretending to be a girl. Man, did he look good in this movie!

A rather enjoyable chick flick about how men are shit at relationships that at times can be manipulative and pontificating, but all of that is easily forgiven by the adorable and flawless ensemble cast.

An adequate remake of the 1981 cult classic. Nothing to write home about, except for the upped levels of blood and gore. I really truly expected to be scared shitless but, at best, just got startled.

John Dies at the End (2012) - IMDb
4/10
A rather disjointed, ultimately disappointing adaptation of an otherwise hilarious and excellent book. The actors did the best they could. And so did the special effects people. Paul Giamatti should've known better. With this kind of material, it's either you go big or don't go at all.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013) - IMDb
5/10
The studio executives who green-lighted this movie are probably kicking themselves in the shins, given the recent meteoric rise to box office stardom of one Channing Tatum. His limited involvement in this movie does not help the flimsy and dull plot, and the even duller Joes and their counterpart villains. Don't expect another sequel because this franchise is done.

Olympus Has Fallen (2013) - IMDb
8/10
Gerard Butler proves he can be a certifiable old-school action hero in this fast-paced, action-packed thriller that has its pulse firmly on the current cause of worldwide concern: the mysterious and unruly state of North Korea. There's never a boring moment, and while the premise borrows heavily from Bruce Willis' Die Hard series, the movie succeeds on its own merits with well-executed action scenes and excellent acting from everyone involved.

Oz the Great and Powerful (2013) - IMDb
7/10
A clever reimagining of the Wizard of Oz mythology which keeps the legacy and spirit of the original 1939 movie and gives it a shiny origin story. Sam Raimi clearly wanted his own "Alice In Wonderland" (hello Tim Burton), which is good and dandy, but he never quite managed to lift it past "Spider-Man." In fact, the Wicked Witch reminded me far too much of the Green Goblin. Still, a nice fun movie for the family.

Christopher and His Kind (TV 2011) - IMDb

Steven Spielberg's latest opus is a curious thing. It looks like it deserves all those Oscar nominations, and maybe even the big one. But there's something about it that's not quite deserving of so much adulation. It's hard to put a finger on it. At any rate, the movie is certainly an acting vehicle for star Daniel Day Lewis. Expect an Oscar win for him.

The premise of biological disaster was promising, but the execution destroyed it all. Why can't filmmakers just make thrillers the traditional way and stop using "found footage"? They really should ban the use of "found footage" as a film technique. It's messy. It's grainy. It never comes off as real. And it gives me a damn headache watching it.

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D (2012) - IMDb
5/10
This sequel to the 2006 movie based on the popular video game has all the necessary ingredients of creep, gore and suspense. It's just a shame the by-the-numbers execution has rendered it utterly bland, unexciting and unscary. The cool monsters are the only good thing about this whole enterprise.

Not very many scary movies actually scare me these days, but this one achieved that goal without resorting to too much gore (though it did employ a few of the cliched scare tactics). The ending was a little disappointing, but I guess that's just because they want to set it up for a sequel (or two).

Rise of the Zombies (TV 2012) - IMDb
4/10
They tried to break some new ground in this zombie flick, but unfortunately, the TV movie budget it received pretty much ensured that it won't rise to the levels of awesome and just merely barely scratch at acceptably mediocre. Great to see Levar Burton and Mariel Hemingway still getting gainful employment, though!

Looper (2012) - IMDb
8/10
I still don't quite buy the premise that the Mafia would employ time travel to off people in the distant future, but with a little leap of faith, this movie delivers on all fronts: the sci-fi, the suspense, the action. Joseph Gordon-Levitt rises to yet a new career high as the lead character.

Premium Rush (2012) - IMDb
7/10
The action scenes with the bikes are exhilarating and induce quite a rush (especially if you're a cyclist yourself), but I just couldn't get over how lame the entire premise of the movie was. In the day and age of smartphones, it seems rather silly. But I guess without it, there won't be a movie. And we won't get to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt riding around like hell.

The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations (2009)...
3/10
I wish I could time-travel back to when I decided to watch this mess of a movie and get back the 90 minutes that I've wasted. The plot was terrible. The twist at the end was downright lame. If it wasn't for Chris Carmack's many shirtless scenes and the occasional gore, I wouldn't have persevered and stuck around till the end credits.

Installment No. 5 in the Resident Evil begins promisingly with a backward credit sequence, but immediately degrades into a messy excuse for quick zombie scares, blazing guns and a couple of big bad bosses. And what the hell is up with that ending? I guess we can expect another sequel in 2014.

This tale about a young Palestinian refugee and an Israeli fighter pilot who form a tentative bond in their attempt to make their way across war-torn Lebanon back to their home is timely and poignant, and gives us hope that we could all overcome racial and political differences someday. Sadly, it is bogged down by glacial pacing in the beginning. The total running time is listed at 107 minutes, but it felt like the movie went on forever.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012) - IMDb

Everyone delivers in this ensemble drama about a man trying to make a brand new start after spending time in a mental health facility following the breakdown of his marriage. Bradley Cooper proves he's more than just comedy as former teacher Pat Solitano, and Jennifer Lawrence is simply stunning as Tiffany, the young widow who falls for him. The role is beyond her young years, but the "Hunger Games" actress pulls it off with flying colours.

I very much enjoyed the future Earth they've conjured for this remake of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie. Lots of cool fictional technology that could actually be real someday. I can see what they were trying to do with this loose film adaptation (and I use that term very loosely) of James Robert Baker's novel of the same name. Sadly, everything seems half-assed. I almost totally believed that beastly Kyle is totally not recognizable as hot Kyle. Like, totally.

Midnight in Paris (2011) - IMDb
8/10
Woody Allen's love letter to Paris, France is innovative, witty and charming. Owen Wilson is delightful as a wide-eyed dreamer.

Green Lantern (2011) - IMDb

Not as bad as most people make it out to be. Decent visual effects. Workable plot. Ryan Reynolds was cute and adorable as the titular character.

Take Cloverfield, E.T., Revenge Of The Nerds, District 9, and maybe Adventureland, and put them in a blender, and you get Super 8. Nice of J.J. Abrams to do a throwback to the movies that Steven Spielberg did in the 80s, but it's mostly... pedestrian, and doesn't "whelm" one way or the other. Additionally, he needs to take a break from making suspense movies because his shtick has become repetitive and predictable.

Hunger (2008) - IMDb
9/10
A bleak and depressing look at the struggles of the Irish Republican Army, as seen through the harsh treatment by the British state of its Irish political prisoners, and the slow inevitable death of IRA leader Bobby Sands, who led a fruitless hunger strike demanding political status in 1981. A stellar first effort from directory Steve McQueen, and a commendable mainstream debut by actor Michael Fassbender, who delivers a truly gritty and naked performance, literally and figuratively.

X-Men: First Class (2011) - IMDb
9/10
This prequel/origin story adeptly resuscitates the limping X-Men movie franchise and preps it up for a new generation of fans with a smart story and a great-looking new cast. The best thing in the movie, bar none, is easily Magneto in sweatpants.

I Am Number Four (2011) - IMDb
9/10
Okay, it's pretty much the same old teen angst, coming-of-age story with a heavy sci-fi Roswellian slant. But who cares? It was well done. Effects were great. The action/battle sequences were fantastic. And the actors were pretty decent and oh so pretty easy on the eyes. My only lament is that they didn't put more of Number 6 in the movie. There HAS to be a sequel.

Florent: Queen of the Meat Market (2010) -...
2/10
A disjointed, masturbatory, wholly unnecessary hindsight look at the entrepreneurial adventures of a gay bistro owner in New York's meatpacking district who admittedly used activism to further his own business interests. Kinda like how Lady Gaga is today.
