All the Hollywood stars referenced in Madonna’s ‘Vogue’ are now dead

Following the announcement yesterday morning of Lauren Bacall’s death, aged 89, there is now no one named in Madonna’s iconic song ‘Vogue’ who is still alive.

As noted by Slate, the song, and its accompanying black and white video, are homages to the “golden age” of Hollywood. Towards the end, Madonna sings: “Greta Garbo, and Monroe, Deitrich and DiMaggio, Marlon Brando, Jimmy Dean, On the cover of a magazine.

Grace Kelly; Harlow, Jean, picture of a beauty queen, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rodgers, dance on air. They had style, they had grace, Rita Hayworth gave good face. Lauren, Katherine, Lana too. Bette Davis, we love you.”

Of the sixteen Hollywood starred mentioned in the song, Lauren Bacall was, until yesterday, the only one still left alive. With her death, no one referenced in the song is still living.

On the song’s release in 1990, nine of the stars were still alive – Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Joe DiMaggio, Marlon Brando, Gene Kelly, Ginger Rogers, Lauren Bacall, Katharine Hepburn and Lana Turner. All of them have now died.

Lauren Bacall, best known for her roles in To Have and Have Not, How To Marry A Millionaire and The Mirror Has Two Faces, died yesterday of a stroke aged 89.
