Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger: ‘I’m double transgender’

Kroeger: Man in lady in man

Chad Kroeger, the lead singer of Canadian arena rock group Nickelback, has come out as “double transgender,” a rare condition in which the afflicted feels there is someone of the opposite sex within them, and that person inside in turn feels like the opposite sex.

Nested gender dysphoria, also known as Matroyshka dysphoria, is extremely rare and affects less than 1 percent of the population.

According to Rolling Stone magazine, Kroeger is immediately beginning the process of living as a French woman named Sherry LaFlamme living as a Mexican man named Fernando Mortiz. A publicist for Nickelback, Ralph James, said the singer plans to continue performing under his current stage name.

“For me, the scariest thing about this was how the other guys would accept the news,” Kroeger said of his fellow band members. “But they’ve been really tolerant and accepting. They got me a sombrero as a present the next day.”

Kroeger’s announcement comes on the heels of the recent admission by Against Me! lead singer Tom Gabel that he is transgender and will begin living as a woman under the name Laura Jane Grace. Gabel is widely considered to be rock’s first “major” transgender figure, and has inspired Kroeger to come forward with his own condition.

“I’m going to be honest and say that this thing tends to be a little confusing,” Kroeger said. “But I’m hoping eventually people will come to accept there is a lady in me who thinks she’s a man.”

The singer says he has dealt with nested gender dysphoria privately for many years. “Where Do I Hide,” from Nickelback’s multi-platinum smash “Silver Side Up,” is actually about his internal struggle with the condition.

Kroeger and Nickelback are currently on a massive world tour in support of their latest album, Here & Now, which debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
