It’s undeniable that 2016 was a terrible year all around. So many great musicians passed away. Icons like David Bowie, Prince and Leonard Cohen. All taken too soon. And then there’s the matter of *cough* Donald Trump *cough*. But let’s not get into that and ruin our spirit. Instead, let’s look back at the songs that made the last 365 days at least somewhat bearable.

As per usual, these 21 songs are ranked based on each title’s performance on the Bent*Spun 21 from the chart dated January 3, 2016 through to the chart dated December 25, 2016. Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 21 earning the least.

This year yields a healthy mix of EDM, country, dancehall, R&B and indie. Unlike last year, there is no clear dominant force on this year’s year-end tally, although two acts did manage to double up on the countdown: Thomas Rhett and TWENTY ØNE PILØTS. Also, unlike previous years, no “oldies” (tracks released prior to 2015/2016) dented the countdown.
