The Bent*Spud 2 Cents:
I don't understand why Spike Lee didn't just make a straight up drama and instead opted to mix in bits of comedy on this one. The seesawing between frivolity and profundity can be a bit off-putting. Perhaps Lee didn't want to make yet another dead-serious-through-and-through movie chronicling the ills and evils of racism. Nevertheless, the movie succeeds at its main purpose, reminding everyone in 2018 that things haven't really changed all that much since the time period that the film is set in. There's still a lot of work to do.
