‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ soars with plot twists, intense action

Everyone’s favorite shield-wielding, all-American patriot is back for the second installment of a (presumably) trilogy of films. This time, the Cap faces off with the mysterious Winter Soldier, an antagonist with some major baggage and shady friends in high places.

Just when everyone thought Hydra was long dead and gone, we find that the subversive organization survived its presumed destruction and managed to infiltrate the inner circles of S.H.I.E.L.D. This sets in motion a very dangerous initiative aimed at achieving maximum homeland security at the expense of democracy, privacy and personal freedom. Not if Steve Rogers can help it, of course.

Chris Evans is in fine form as Captain America, as are Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson, who reprise their roles as Nick Fury and Natasha Romanoff, respectively. Anthony Mackie joins the heroic team as high-flying good guy Falcon. Together they power through this superior movie packed with plot twists from out of the blue and adrenalin-inducing action sequences, including an amazing elevator fight scene and breathtaking car chases.

Without a doubt, co-directors Anthony & Joe Russo adeptly handled this latest addition to the Marvel canon, furthering the awesomeness established by 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and setting the stage for the next chapter of the Avengers movie series next year.
