A man has been arrested amid claims he assaulted his mum with POTATO SALAD in an altercation at their home.

According to police, the situation arose when they were sitting down to eat dinner as a family.

Jonathan Smith, from Bradenton, Florida, faces a domestic battery charge for allegedly pelting his mother with the chilled side dish.

The 34-year-old was arrested Saturday evening after his mother Jennifer told officers he attacked her as she sat down to eat dinner in the living room.

But despite having salad and chicken, things got heated fast and in an unpredictable pique of rage, the son is alleged to have launched potato salad at his mother.

“Jonathan grabbed a hand full of potato salad and threw it,” striking his mother in the face, reported police.

Not once or twice, but police say in their report that it was a somewhat sustained assault.

She was shouting for him to stop, but he “continued to throw food at his mother”.

Officers who attended the food fight say she had “food all over her and in her hair”.

Still not finished, a probable cause affidavit said he then allegedly pushed her to the ground, pulled her across the floor by her legs, and “spitted on her”.

Pallet maker Smith fled the home on his bicycle when his mother threatened to call 911.

He was subsequently arrested blocks from the residence by an officer who noted that the suspect “appeared to be intoxicated”.

In addition to the misdemeanour battery count, Smith is also facing a probation violation charge stemming from a prior felony conviction.

He is scheduled for a September 24 court appearance and remains in custody.
