Landlord slammed as house hunters spot very odd detail in ‘bedroom’ for rent
While browsing the site Trade Me for a new home, one user got a bit of a shock.
They thought they’d found the perfect place after stumbling across a listing for a room to rent for just over £40 a week in a pretty house in Tauranga, New Zealand.
However they soon discovered the rental advert was too good to be true after spotting something rather unusual in the so-called ‘bedroom’.
On one side of the room there was a single bed and mirror – but on the other, a washing machine, laundry cupboard and sink.
It turned out it wasn’t a bedroom at all, but the laundry room in a family house.
The advert claimed the washing machine would only be used on Saturday mornings, reports the NZ Herald.
Potential renters would be charged $80 a week and would need to pay for food and toiletries on top of this.
In attempt to redeem itself, the ad also said the house included large gardens with avocados, a spa and ‘all mod cons’.
The listing has since been removed from the website, following backlash.
Trade Me’s head of trust and safety, George Hiotakis said it was important for those listing a room to be honest and upfront about the property.
He said: “The seller looks to have been very upfront with the images and description of the property, which is what we ask of all our members.
“Renting a laundry room definitely won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.”
He added that prospective tenants should make sure to ask plenty of questions, check the seller’s feedback and look at the accommodation themselves before signing anything or making a payment.
