Office clerk to re-enact author’s memoirs
Cardiff, Wales — A government worker desperate to acquire some level of social significance is re-enacting American author Julie Powell‘s memoirs “Julie and Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously” page by page.
Clarice Darling, 29, said she decided to take on the massive undertaking of reliving Powell’s life after watching the critically acclaimed movie “Julie & Julia” starring Meryl Streep as celebrated chef and American icon Julia Child, and Amy Adams as the erstwhile unfulfilled housewife who shot to fame after she cooked all 524 recipes in the former’s “Mastering The Art Of French Cooking” within 365 days and blogged about it every step of the way.
“I was just so moved and inspired by the possibility of having your life transformed completely just by doing something that someone else has already done and talking about it on the Internet,” said Darling, who works for the National Health Service as an administrative assistant.
“I was just so moved and inspired by the possibility of having your life transformed completely just by doing something that someone else has already done and talking about it on the Internet.”
Darling admitted she is not particularly smart and does not possess any awe-inspiring talent whatsoever, but that she is a “voracious reader who can read anyone under the table.”
“My mother used to yell at me because all I ever did was read,” she said. “Romance novels, newspapers, pub menus, you name it. I’ll read anything under the sun.”
The married mother of two young children said she intends to be faithful to Powell’s memoirs as much as her purse strings will allow. She has already made plans to move to Brooklyn, New York by the end of the summer, leaving her life and family in Cardiff behind.
“I couldn’t thank my husband and children enough for their understanding and willingness to support me and my crazy dream,” she said. “They didn’t understand at first when I told them, but now they’re fully on board.”
Darling said she is “scared and excited at the same time” about her life-changing decision. She will initially be living below a laundromat for a couple of months, but will eventually move to a second-floor apartment above a pizzeria, at which time her project officially begins. A man she met on craigslist has agreed to live with her and play the role of Eric, Julie Powell’s husband.
“I couldn’t live the rest of my life cataloguing bunions and warts. I just couldn’t,” she said. “I need to have a movie made about me.”
