“Butterfly” by Mariah Carey

Album Title: Butterfly

Year of Release: 1997

Performed by: Mariah Carey

The Bent*Spud 2 Cents:

The vocal powerhouse’s sixth studio album continues her foray into the hip hop and urban styles which began with previous album Daydream. Recorded during her tumultuous separation and eventual divorce from ex-husband Tommy Mottola, many of the lyrics take on a confessional tone, and Ms. Carey’s subdued singing adds to the overarching melancholy of a love dissolving. Her saddest album, bar none.

Best Tracks: “Butterfly,” “Breakdown,” “My All,” “Honey,” “The Roof”
